The lush and beautiful beauty of the Alps, filmed with painting grace, under the natural light from the frigid winter until the redemption spring, provides a physical and emotional background for ‘Vermiglio’, a visionary film by Maure Delpero, who won a silver lion at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. This unique portrait of a widespread family, set up in a small mountain village of Vermiglio during the decaying days of World War II, follows a series of dramatic, consequent events after the arrival of a tacit Sicilian soldier (Giuseppe de Domenico), which is summed up in the city after leaving the army. While there, the soldier develops a romance with the oldest daughter of the family, Lucia (Martina Scrini). ‘Vermiglio’ shows the lives of a provincial family in a remote village suspended in time of customs pale. Making stories from the past of his own family, Delpero creates a deep personal and human story that remembers the great neorealist movement in the Italian cinema, but through Luci’s perspective ‘Vermiglio’ feels extremely and new.
